Yardage Books
What are they? Most golf courses print their own as a way to advertise local businesses and to provide golfers with information about each hole. Most yardage books are free but depending on the information contained in them, some that are professionally created for the PGA Tour players can cost some pretty dollars.
As a casual golfer, you can create your own. All you need is a pocket notebook with at least 18 pages in it, one for every hole. If you have a favorite course or two, it might be worth your while to keep some notes about each hole such as how far each fairway bunker is from the tee or how far is the water edge. These are some examples of what you would add to a yardage book.
Plan each page to contain 3 main things:
The green view is a map of the greens. It should include undulation, namely where the fall lines are. Include distances or steps as well. Some people would add esoteric notes to direction of the grass blades but that depends on how the greenskeeper maintains the green. I wouldn't go that far imo.
The notes section is for live playing. That is, for you to write your own notes as you play the hole.
